On 1st July, I’ll be celebrating a very special milestone, 15 years of owning and running VillaMia. When I took over the business back in 2011, I didn't have a grand business plan or a long list of goals. My motivation was much simpler. I wanted to build a life in Jávea with my son, Ethan, and create a future for us here on the Costa Blanca.
Looking back, it was a huge leap of faith. I was buying a business in a different country, navigating a new language and culture, and doing it all while being far away from family and friends back in Wales. At times it was challenging, but it was also one of the best decisions I have ever made.
Over the past 15 years, VillaMia has grown alongside me. We've moved into our office on the Arenal, built a wonderful team, and had the privilege of helping hundreds of people find their dream home in Jávea and the surrounding area. One of the things I treasure most is that many of those clients have become good friends along the way.
Today, VillaMia is a respected local business with a loyal client base, a fantastic team, and a reputation built on trust, honesty and personal service. I couldn't be prouder of what we've achieved together.

The Marina Alta economy continues to show positive momentum, with employment reaching a new record high in May. According to figures from the Marina Alta Observatory, 67,132 people are now registered with Social Security, an increase of more than 2,600 compared to the same time last year.
The growth has been driven largely by the hospitality, real estate, retail and construction sectors as the region prepares for the busy summer season. Permanent contracts remain the norm, accounting for more than 73% of all new employment agreements, highlighting the stability of the local labour market.
While unemployment continues to fall across the region, the pace of improvement has slowed slightly. Even so, Marina Alta's unemployment rate remains below both the provincial and regional averages, reflecting the area's strong economic performance and continued appeal as a place to live, work and invest.
As the summer season gets underway, daily lifeguard and rescue services are now operating on Jávea's main beaches, helping to keep residents and visitors safe during the busiest months of the year.
The service is currently being provided by the Red Cross under an emergency agreement while the Town Hall completes the formal tender process. From now until the end of June, daily cover is available at La Grava, Arenal, Granadella and Portitxol beaches, with Benissero covered at weekends. From 1st July, all five beaches will benefit from a daily service.
The lifeguard teams provide beach surveillance, first aid, water rescues and safety information, including the flag system that keeps beachgoers informed about sea conditions. The move ensures that safety measures are fully in place as visitor numbers increase across the Costa Blanca this summer.
Tomatoes are now in peak season and bursting with flavour. Combined with locally grown cucumbers, peppers and onions, they form the basis of many traditional Mediterranean dishes and refreshing summer salads. Courgettes, aubergines and green beans are also plentiful throughout July.
The Valencia region is also famous for its figs, which begin appearing towards the end of the month, while local vineyards start to prepare for the grape harvest later in the summer.
Shopping at local markets is one of the best ways to experience the flavours of the Costa Blanca, support local growers and enjoy produce at its freshest. Whether you're preparing a barbecue, a picnic on the beach or a leisurely lunch on the terrace, July offers an incredible variety of seasonal ingredients to enjoy.
