If you're self-employed, the idea of switching off and taking a proper holiday might sound like a fantasy. But with a bit of planning it is possible, and necessary.
According to Spain’s Association of Self-Employed Workers (ATA), nearly 4 in 10 freelancers didn’t plan to take a holiday last year. Why? The common reasons are fear of losing clients, not earning during time off, or feeling the need to be available 24/7.
But the truth is your wellbeing matters, and you deserve time off too!
Let your clients know you’ll be away — ideally a month or two in advance. This gives you time to finish up any outstanding work, and sets clear expectations. It also helps avoid last-minute emails or calls when you're trying to relax on the beach.
If you're using the same mobile number for personal life and work, it's time to rethink. Not only can a dedicated work phone line be a deductible business expense, it also gives you permission to unplug fully when you're off duty. If that's not an option, at least consider setting "Do Not Disturb" or going airplane mode for a few hours each day.
In Spain, August is famously quiet. Many clients go on holiday, business slows, and expectations shift. If you’re going to take time off, now’s the moment — you’ll likely lose fewer opportunities than you would in busier months.
Yes, it’s tough. But not every request is urgent, and not every opportunity is worth sacrificing your wellbeing. Part of being a successful freelancer is setting boundaries and protecting your time.
Michelle Hughes, owner of VillaMia Real Estate SL, said: "Over the years I've come to understand health matters and it is important to get a work life balance. I used to constantly check my phone, even in the middle of the night when I woke up, and always felt I had to reply quickly. Now, I'm a lot better and take holidays where I can switch off and delegate to staff who are more than capable. Prioritising rest isn’t indulgent, it’s essential. Stress is a major killer and should be avoided. Also, after a relaxing break, you feel and sleep better so can serve clients better and make smarter business decisions.
"VillaMia’s office will be open from 9:15am to 1:45pm throughout August, so we too can enjoy a better summer while continuing to serve our clients."
Remember, taking time off doesn’t mean you’re less committed — it means you’re taking care of your most valuable asset: yourself. So plan ahead, communicate clearly, and give yourself permission to enjoy the slower pace of summer. After all, we live in Spain — it’s okay to embrace it.
