7 essential tips for moving to Spain

Are you thinking of moving to the Costa Blanca North? Whether you're drawn to the sunshine, the relaxed Mediterranean pace of life, or the availability of visas like the non-lucrative or digital nomad visa, it's a dream that more and more people are turning into reality.

At VíllaMía, we've helped hundreds of people start their new lives in Jávea and the surrounding Costa Blanca area. Here are seven tips we believe will help you land on your feet in Spain.

1. Learn at least some basic Spanish

Even in a cosmopolitan town like Jávea, daily life will be much smoother if you can understand some Spanish. In tourist areas, many locals speak English, but in everyday situations like visiting the town hall, the medical centre, or a traditional market, basic Spanish will go a long way.

Start with greetings and useful phrases like ¿Cuánto cuesta? (How much is it?), ¿Dónde está...? (Where is...?), gracias (thank you), and por favor (please). Practise regularly, write down new words, and enjoy the learning process.

2. Understand the Spanish schedule

Life in Spain follows a different rhythm. Shops and offices typically open around 10am and close around 9pm, but many still shut for siesta between 2pm and 5pm, especially in smaller towns like Jávea, and especially during the heat of the day in Summer.

Eating times are also later than many expats are used to:

  • Lunch (el almuerzo): 2pm – 4pm
  • Dinner (la cena): from 9pm onwards

At VíllaMía, our office hours are Monday to Friday from 9:30am to 5:30pm (August: 9:15am to 1:45pm). Saturday and out-of-hours appointments are available on request — we know that flexibility matters!

3. Research your neighbourhoods

Jávea has a wide variety of areas, from the traditional Old Town and vibrant port to more residential zones like Tosalet and Balcon al Mar. Each offers a different lifestyle and budget.

Before you commit to a rental or purchase, think about your daily needs, whether you want to be within walking distance of the beach, and what kind of community you'd like around you.

4. Know the cost of living

Spain remains more affordable than many other European countries, but costs vary by lifestyle. Some of our clients live comfortably on a pension, while others spend more based on their preferences.

In Jávea, you'll find good value compared to the UK, especially when it comes to eating out, utilities, and property. But it's wise to plan your budget and compare local prices.

5. Understand how rentals work in Spain

Renting in Spain can differ from what you're used to. Every landlord may have slightly different conditions, and negotiation is common. Most long-term rentals are governed by Spain's Urban Rental Law (Ley de Arrendamientos Urbanos).

Be aware of what's included (utilities, maintenance, furniture, etc.) and always read the contract carefully.

6. Understand the buying process

Buying a home in Spain is exciting, but it's important to understand the steps. From legal checks to mortgage rules for foreigners, taxes, and notary fees – there's a lot to consider.

We always recommend working with trusted professionals who can guide you through the process.

7. Prepare for the paperwork

Spanish bureaucracy is real – from getting your NIE number to registering on the padrón and opening a bank account. These processes are essential for everything from healthcare to signing rental contracts.

Don't worry – at VíllaMía, we've helped hundreds of clients navigate this smoothly. We can advise what documents you need and even put you in touch with translators or legal professionals if you need them.
