April on the Costa Blanca – Sunshine, Springtime & Spanish Charm

April is one of my favourite months here on the Costa Blanca. Spring is in full swing, the sun is shining for longer each day, and the streets are coming alive with colour, local produce and festivals. Whether you're already soaking up the warmth or still dreaming from afar, this month is packed with reasons to fall in love with the area all over again. From springtime food and flowers to unforgettable fiestas, here’s what’s blooming in April ...

April on the Costa Blanca, Spain

April brings mild, sunny days and vibrant scenery, with temperatures typically hovering around 20–24°C. It’s ideal for exploring the coast, heading into the mountains for a wildflower walk, or simply enjoying long, lazy lunches on the terrace. The beaches are quieter than in summer, making it a perfect time for peaceful seaside strolls or a glass of rosé at sunset.

April’s markets are a dream for foodies. Local strawberries are sweet, juicy and at their peak, perfect for desserts or just snacking in the sun. Artichokes (alcachofas) are everywhere. Try them grilled, roasted, or in a rich paella. You’ll also find baby broad beans, fresh peas, wild asparagus and spring garlic, fantastic for cooking up a seasonal Spanish tortilla or sauté.

Semana Santa

Easter, or Semana Santa, is a deeply significant period across Spain, marked by profound religious observances and vibrant cultural events. On the Costa Blanca, this week is characterised by solemn processions, traditional music, and communal gatherings that reflect the region's rich heritage.

Semana Santa in Jávea 2025

In Jávea, Semana Santa commences on Palm Sunday, commemorating Jesus's triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Locals participate in processions carrying palm branches, symbolising peace and eternal life. These processions wind through the historic centre, notably in the Port and Old Town areas, creating a serene and reflective atmosphere.

The most poignant event occurs on Good Friday evening with the Procession of the Holy Burial, a tradition over 400 years old. This solemn procession traverses various streets, including Church Square and Celestino Pons Square, drawing both residents and visitors into a communal act of remembrance.

Throughout the cities of Valencia and Alicante and the Costa Blanca towns like Calpe and Orihuela, each host their own distinctive Semana Santa celebrations, with unique processions and rituals that contribute to the region's diverse cultural tapestry.

Xàbia Folk Festival

Xàbia Folk Festival 2025

Folk music takes centre stage this month in Jávea, with the return of the Xàbia Folk Festival. Held over several days in May but kicking off with a concert in late April, this festival celebrates traditional music and instruments from across Spain and beyond. Most events are free and take place in the historic town centre, The Arenal and the beautiful Ermita de Santa Llúcia.

Once again, the event features a carefully curated selection of artists who combine tradition and modernity within the folk scene.
