In Xàbia, Moraira, and surrounding areas, the arrival of the Three Kings is a spectacle not to be missed, filled with joy, community spirit, and a sprinkling of Spanish tradition. It’s the perfect way to start the year on a celebratory note.

Blue skies that is! The beginning of the year is bright and crisp, you can delight in feeling the warm sun on your skin. It also brings an abundance of seasonal delights to the local markets. Citrus fruits are in their prime, with juicy oranges, sweet mandarins, and refreshing lemons dominating the colourful stalls. Almond trees are beginning to bud, hinting at the beauty to come in the spring. Seasonal vegetables such as artichokes, spinach, and leeks feature prominently, adding to the variety of fresh, local ingredients that make the Costa Blanca a haven for food lovers. If you’re dining out this month, expect to see hearty winter stews and comforting rice dishes like arroz al horno or caldo con pelotas, perfect for the cooler evenings.

Recent environmental restoration work on the Montañar coastline of Xàbia has uncovered the foundations of a 1937 artillery battery, part of the defensive structures from the Spanish Civil War. Originally built to protect the Mediterranean coast from attacks by Francoist forces and Italian fascist planes, this Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) offers a unique glimpse into the region’s wartime past.
Though much of the structure was demolished in the 1980s, the foundations remain remarkably well-preserved and have now been unearthed. Alongside other historical elements, such as casemates and bunkers, these vestiges highlight Xàbia’s strategic role during the war. The restoration project not only ensures the preservation of these elements but also enhances their accessibility and cultural value. Plans include creating archaeological routes with informational signage, 3D models, and immersive exhibits at the Xàbia Museum.
This initiative connects Xàbia’s natural beauty with its historical significance, preserving its legacy for both residents and visitors. As the Primer Montañar restores its coastal landscape, it also revives a significant chapter of its history, reaffirming Xàbia as a unique blend of nature, archaeology, and culture.
