2nd November 2024

As we enter November, our hearts are heavy with the tragic events that have unfolded across the Valencian Community due to the devastating DANA floods. With over 205 lives lost and many more affected, the impact of these floods has left an indelible mark on our communities. The scenes of devastation are heart-wrenching, as entire towns remain cut off, and rescue teams continue their tireless work to reach those still trapped. Many areas are still without basic utilities like water and electricity, and roads are littered with abandoned vehicles, including those on the A7. Despite nearly 72 hours of relentless rescue efforts, authorities are now shifting from rescue to recovery, as they begin to come to terms with the enormity of this tragedy.

The stories emerging are ones of both sorrow and bravery. In Paiporta, the Guardia Civil Chief and one of his officers tragically lost their lives in the line of duty, attempting to retrieve vehicles to aid their community. Families, elderly residents, and courageous first responders have been caught in the overwhelming torrents, with some still awaiting assistance in areas that remain unreachable.

Amidst this sorrow, we have witnessed the incredible strength and resilience of our community. People from all corners of the region have come together to provide aid, supplies, and support for those affected. Sporting events, musical gatherings, and grassroots fundraising initiatives have been organised, demonstrating the deep sense of solidarity and compassion that defines our community. The collective response has been inspiring, reminding us that even in the darkest of times, we stand united.

We ask that everyone respects the request of the authorities to avoid unnecessary travel in these areas, as resources like fuel are limited, and the roads need to be clear for ongoing rescue and recovery efforts.

We then commit in the coming weeks to join others in making a trip to the Valencia food bank organisation providing much needed relief to those in need:
