The Good and Bad of Spain

The outdoor life in Spain is certainly an advantage – there are activities for all ages and fitness levels from surfing and tennis to mountain climbing and cycling. Another advantage is that most people eat outdoors most of the year. Even in January when average tempratures drop to 16 degrees, patio heaters are sufficient to be able to sit outside until the early hours eating and drinking happily.

According to the study, on the negative side, the bureauacy comes top of the list as the biggest issue securing 23%, followed by cruelty to animals at 15%.

Some animal lovers will not like the bull running tradition, especially during fiestas in September when Javea Port attracts people taunting bulls until they are forced to jump into the sea to avoid the angry bulls – sometimes with the bulls falling in and having to be pulled safely back to land.

Surprisingly, the ´manana´ attitude only received a small 3% while Spanish drivers got 11% with the utility companies coming third place with 13%.

Michelle Hughes, owner of VillaMia – an estate agent in Javea, North Costa Blanca, said: "The reason I moved to Spain was for a better quality of life. Back in the UK I worked full time and had to rely on a childminder. I hated the winters and going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark. Now, we are out much more and my son is on his bike and skateboard rather than being sat in front of the TV or computer.

"I was surprised that the weather only got 13% of the votes. Javea benefits from a superb all year round climate and is even recommended by the World Health Organisation for its warm summers and mild winters. It was certainly a big factor when I was considering relocating to Spain.”

VillaMia specialises in the area of Javea – a coastal town sandwiched between the capes of San Antonio and la Nao. Is boasts a stunning sandy beach, Port area, Old Town, international and state schools plus is midway between the cities of Alicante and Valencia with an excellent motorway joining the two cities and airports.
