The British Embassy in Madrid has issued an important announcement regarding the renewal of British passports for all British citizens living in Spain, as well as in other countries.
It will no longer be possible to apply for a new passport via the British Embassy or British Consulate abroad.
The new regulations state that all British residents residing in Spain must now make their passport applications using the Internet via the GOV.UK website found at www.gov.uk/overseas-passports.
With the new system, applicants will have their own personalised pack created once they supply the site with some preliminary information. Then, the documents must be printed out, signed and sent to the Passport Office in the UK (address provided) along with passport photographs and other necessary documentation – all detailed within the site.
Payment for this procedure is made online, which will include a courier fee of £19.86. This is so that the passport is delivered to you safely and securely.
The total feel for a standard 32-page passport plus courier is £147.86.
As soon as the application has been submitted, you can track its progress online via the website.
For those who will need to renew their passports this year, it is advisable not to leave it until the last minute.
It is estimated that from the time that an application has been received by post at the Passport Office in the UK it will take at least 4 weeks to process and return, and this is extended to at least 6 weeks for lost or stolen passports.
In actual fact, it is possible to apply for a new passport up to 9 months in advance, before your old one runs out.
