If you are resident in Spain, you should exchange your UK licence for a Spanish one. You can still use your Spanish licence in the UK for short visits or exchange it for a UK licence without taking a test if you return to live in the UK.
If you hold an old UK licence that doesn’t have a 10-year validity period, you must renew or exchange it for a Spanish licence once you’ve been a resident in Spain for 2 years.
When I did this it was a simple process and no test was needed – just the paperwork needed. We can put you in-touch with someone that can organise it for you if you prefer.
If you are in Spain and your UK driving licence is lost, stolen or expires, you will not be able to renew it with the UK Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). You will need to apply to the DVLA for a ‘certificate of entitlement’ in Spanish to be able to apply for a Spanish driving licence.
Remember Spain has different driving laws so make sure you read up on these to avoid any fines. For example, you cannot drive in flip flops, eat or drink when driving, have your arm resting on the window or even have your shopping on the back seats!
Cars are more expensive in Spain but it is easier to have a left-hand drive vehicle when driving in Spain.

Mía Cars of Javea has supplied used cars for sale on the Costa Blanca in Spain since 2004. All vehicles undergo a full safety check before sale, and a Spanish HPI check to ensure they are debt-free. They also take English cars in part exchange.
If you are thinking of bringing a UK-registered vehicle then Mia Cars can offer advice on costs to expect and the pitfalls and benefits.
If you register as a resident or spend longer than 6 months of the year in Spain, you must register your vehicle with the Spanish authorities and may need to pay taxes.
