Spain is a beautiful country known for its vibrant culture, stunning beaches, and warm climate. However, the warm weather also means mosquitoes can be problematic, particularly during summer. If you plan a trip to Spain, you must be aware of the mosquito situation and take steps to protect yourself. In this article, we will discuss some tips to help you deal with mosquitoes in Spain.
1. Wear Protective Clothing Wearing long-sleeved shirts, pants, and socks can help to prevent mosquito bites. Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colours, so it is best to wear light-coloured clothing. If you will be outside during the evening, wearing a hat is also a good idea.
2. Use Mosquito Repellent Using mosquito repellent is another effective way to protect yourself from mosquito bites. You can buy mosquito repellent at most pharmacies and supermarkets in Spain. Look for a repellent containing DEET, the most effective ingredient for repelling mosquitoes.
3. Use Mosquito Nets If you are staying in a hotel or apartment, using a mosquito net over your bed is a good idea. Mosquito nets are handy if you stay in a rural area or near a body of water.
4. Avoid Areas with Stagnant Water Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, so avoiding areas with standing water is important. This includes ponds, lakes, and puddles. If you are staying in a villa with a swimming pool, ensure the pool is properly maintained and treated with chlorine.
5. Keep Windows and Doors Closed Mosquitoes are most active during the evening, so keeping your windows and doors closed during this time is essential. If you need to keep your windows open for ventilation, ensure they have screens to keep mosquitoes out.
6. Treat Mosquito Bites If you do get bitten by a mosquito, it is important to treat the bite to reduce itching and prevent infection. You can use over-the-counter creams and lotions that contain hydrocortisone or calamine to relieve itching. If the edge becomes infected, see a doctor.

Repellents are expensive and you could go through them like no one’s business, so this may also help :

At Home

If you have already been bitten, use a hot spoon from a cup of tea or coffee to treat the bites as this stops the itch. You can also buy a cheap Aloe Vera plant, cut off and skin a piece then rub it onto the affected areas.

Mosquitos hate wind so turn on a fan and point it towards you during the night.

To Buy

There are several cheaper options you can try from supermarkets such as:

- Agua de Colonia – found in the shower gel department
- Lavender water or Citronella spray
- You can also get night-time electric plug-ins for your home
- Mosquito coils (start burning them in a perimeter around your outdoor seating area early in the day, they last 8 hours)
- Citronella candles

In Carrefour you can also find bracelets with a capsule of repellent. Worn on the wrist or ankle they are pretty effective

Lavender may be a favourite scent of many people but mosquitoes detest the scent of the purple flower. You can buy the plant from garden centres for outside main doors. Aloe Vera is another plant worth buying to deter them.

Worth a try

These 7 mosquito repellent foods can be easily incorporated into your normal diet to combat your persistent insect bite problems so have a look and maybe add some of these to your shopping list:

- Garlic and Onions
- Apple Cider Vinegar
- Lemongrass
- Chili Peppers
- Tomatoes
- Grapefruit
- Beans and Lentils
- Beer

Vitamin B is the only vitamin that has been tested to repel Mosquitos.

Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colours like blue and black. To avoid extra mosquito bites make sure to wear light colours like white and khaki. Not only will they help deter the mosquitoes but they will also help you feel cooler by reflecting sunlight.

Switch to as many unscented beauty products as you can. That includes: hair sprays, shampoos, soaps and body lotions. Fragrances are known to attract mosquitoes, so perfumes and colognes should also be used sparingly.

Avon Skin So Soft is available at several places in Javea and some people recommend this.

Good old fashion vic vaper rub as well - apply around your ankles wrists and neck.

Finally, you can try your own repellent and the more well-known ones are:

- coconut oil and citronella oil together and rub it all over.
- 1 bottle of blue mouth wash only blue. 2 cans of stale beer and a bag of Epsom salts - mix and put in spray bottle and spray around the perimeter of your property.

Hopefully some of these will work for you and let you enjoy the lovely summer in Javea and the surrounding areas. Good luck!
