VillaMía team members Ethan Hughes, Suzette Jennings, and Michelle Emery lend a helping hand at the Make A Smile Self Sufficiency Greenhouse Project in Relleu. Covering 10 hectares of land near Finestrat is an amazing place where a team of volunteers lead by Tony Grande of The Calpe Bed Center, is making magic happen to support the Emaus home of 24 mentally handicapped young adults. The home and carers receive little to no funding and rely upon the Self Sufficiency Farm to cover all their basic needs.
Every Thursday a group of volunteers travel to Relleu to spend the day planting, weeding, and harvesting vegetables such as yummy lettuce, cabbage, spinach, potatoes, broad beans, courgettes, onions, cauliflower and more! Make A Smile has raised money by offering the community a chance to sponsor a Happy Hen or Olive Tree. The Happy Hen eggs are delicious and the olives are sent to a local co-op where they are turned into oil. The vegetables, eggs, and olive oils are used by the home and the extras are sold to the community to raise funds to cover costs of food, toiletries, cleaning supplies, utilities, and more.
The volunteers do an amazing job but it is a lot of work raising funds to keep the home running with only the bare essentials. VillaMía is proud to serve as the Javea Collection Point for Make A Smile donations for all the Emaus homes including the childrens home and women’s shelter. Any and all donations are appreciated but the homes are especially in need of clothes and toiletries such as shower gel, soap, deodorant, and shampoos. All books, games, toys, are greatly appreciated by the kids and the farm is always in need of supplies and tools as well. Feel free to contact VillaMía with any questions.
