Bigger and Better Alicante Airport
Alicante Airport – which boasts around 9.5 million passengers a year – is set to attract even more passengers in the near future.
Alicante ’s el altet airport - one of the five most used airports in Spain – is in the process of having a new terminal and car park built to increase its flights and passenger capacity by 22 percent.
As an extra boost, the Alicante provincial tourism board has asked the government to follow the example set by the Greek government and scrap the airport taxes airline companies have to pay.
The move by the Greek government will force down the cost of flying there and make it more economical for airlines. In recent years countries such as Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia - direct rivals to Alicante and the Costa Blanca - reduced their airport taxes to the point where they are now subsidising airlines that cannot sell all of their seats.
David Mear, owner of VillaMia, said: “The improved airport should result in attracting more people to the beautiful area of the Costa Blanca. The extra terminal and car park will be an added bonus for tourists, local Spanish people and, of course, property owners over here as they tend to travel back to the UK on a regular basis. If costs also reduce this will be the icing on the cake as it is a win-win situation and anything which can help improve the current economic climate must be a good thing”.
